The application of veneers is becoming an increasingly popular cosmetic dental procedure that addresses badly aligned, damaged or discolored teeth and creates a celebrity-style kilowatt smile.
Your smile is one of your best assets, giving an impression of health, friendliness and happiness. A great smile can also be beneficial in social situations, help attract a partner and make you more confident and outgoing. It is easy to see why veneers are a top choice for people hoping to improve their smile!
What exactly are veneers?
Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain that are applied over the top of the existing tooth in order to give a whiter, brighter and more aesthetically pleasing appearance. Veneers can also provide an additional layer of strength, which is particularly beneficial if you have teeth with very thin or weak enamel.
One of the biggest benefits of veneers is that they are resistant to stains formed from activities such as smoking and drinking red wine, which means that they are a long lasting solution to creating a beautiful smile. However, they are also a permanent option. Applying traditional porcelain veneers requires the slight removal of the enamel on the front of the teeth, so while you can remove veneers, your natural teeth underneath will be not be in their original condition.

Traditional Porcelain Veneers
The most commonly selected type of veneer is the traditional porcelain variety, partly because they can be successfully used to improve the appearance of the teeth in a variety of situations including:
- To hide teeth that are fractured/broken, chipped or damaged in some other way.
- To eliminate gaps between teeth.
- To level the thickness of teeth to give them a more uniform appearance.
- In cases where teeth whitening/bleaching has been unsuccessful, veneers can provide the pearly white finish that a patient may be looking for.
Porcelain laminate veneers are created using multiple ultra-thin ceramic layers which are applied using a special dental adhesive.
During the procedure to apply your veneers you will be given a local anesthetic. This will numb the area being worked
The bonding process is crucial to get right, as not only will it secure the veneer in place, but it will also allow the veneer to function like a normal tooth. A light-sensitive resin in placed between the original tooth and the new veneer, and by using a special laser/light, your dentist will harden the resin so that your new veneer is firmly secured in place.
Instant veneers provide an alternative to the lengthier process of filing down the existing tooth before
This type of veneer application is usually significantly quicker and causes less discomfort, but it is not a viable option for all patients, and particularly not for those who have very poor original teeth. Looking after your Veneers
You may find that you have some sensitivity to extreme temperatures for anything up to a week after your veneers are attached. This is due to the removal of the enamel that was required in order to fit them successfully.
Generally, approximately seven days after your procedure your doctor or a member of his Vero Dental Spa team will see you for a follow-up appointment, where he/she will be able to assess how well the veneers are placed and are functioning for you.
Although veneers are relatively strong, they still require proper care and attention. You should ensure that you continue with a thorough oral hygiene routine including brushing with a non-abrasive toothpaste
