Root Canal Therapy

When most people think of dental emergencies, they think of having a tooth chipped, knocked out, or dental trauma from a car accident. However, your mouth is incredibly complex, and sometimes the emergency could be below the surface level.

Oftentimes, when patients that have not received preventative dental care in a long time experience a sudden toothache, the underlying cause is a cavity or infection.

When an infection reaches the center of the tooth, known as the pulp, it requires root canal therapy, which should be done as quickly as possible to prevent further discomfort and complication.

There is a common misconception that root canal treatments are incredibly painful. However, modern root canal treatments are as painless as a routine cavity filling and end up relieving pain. At Vero Dental Spa, we offer emergency root canal therapies, so we can treat your infected tooth and relieve discomfort as soon as possible.

Root Canal Process

What is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy is required when a tooth’s root becomes damaged from a large cavity or dental trauma. When a cavity caused by bacteria grows to reach the center of the tooth, it can become infected and inflamed, causing a lot of pain.

During a root canal, we numb the tooth with an anesthetic, and open the pulp chamber at the top of the crown to clean the inflamed root. Then, we use advanced technology to file and clean the infected pulp in the tooth’s canals. Next, we irrigate the tooth to clean the canal and remove any debris, before filling the canals with a permanent filling material to keep it clean of infection.

Oftentimes, a temporary filling is needed, until we are able to cover it with permanent filling or a crown. Crowns are sometimes placed over the top of the damaged tooth to preserve the function and appearance of the damaged tooth.

When is an Emergency Root Canal Needed?

Emergency root canals are performed when a patient suffers from a toothache caused by an inflamed nerve. Pain from an infected tooth can be mild, acute, chronic, or mainly experienced when eating hot or cold food.

Emergency root canals are designed to give you instant relief from an infected tooth and prioritize your comfort by alleviating pain with antibiotics. Beyond providing instant relief, emergency root canals preserve the natural tooth structure, providing the following benefits:
  • Restore the function of the infected tooth, improving your ability to chew and digest food.
  • Restore bite force and sensation when chewing.
  • Restore the natural appearance of your tooth and smile.
  • Preserve other teeth from becoming worn out and strained from uneven bite pressure.

What Happens When a Patient Forgoes a Root Canal?

When inflammation or infection is ignored, it can lead to variety of more advanced complications. For instance, when an infection in the pulp of the tooth grows into a painful dental abscess, it is often treated with an emergency root canal. Some symptoms that might be a sign of more serious dental conditions that need emergency treatment, include:
  • Pink and protruding gum tissue
  • Pulp tissue oozing out of the tooth
  • Swelling in the gums around the infected tooth
  • Sore and inflamed areas in the jaw and mouth

If you think you have a dental abscess or need a root canal, it is important to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Leaving an infection untreated can cause the infection to spread to the rest of your mouth, leading to tooth loss and other advanced dental issues.
