The thought of dentures may conjure up images of your great-grandmother putting her teeth in a glass of water overnight, and although dentures have come a long way in terms of design and realism, there are still a number of challenges that come with choosing them as a method to cover your missing teeth.
Dentures need to be held in place using adhesive which must be reapplied every time the teeth are removed. This adhesive usually comes in the form of wafers or paste, which aren’t always reliable and can cause the dentures to slip, move around and in some cases – fall out!
Dentures also require quite a lot of maintenance, cleaning and must be replaced when they wear out. However, as a temporary or budget option, dentures may be your best solution to missing teeth.
If you are able to invest a little more in your smile, then you may like to consider dental implants. Dental implants are a permanent solution to missing teeth that look and function exactly like your natural teeth. They are crowns that are anchored to the jaw using metal posts, making them extremely strong and secure. The metal posts act in place of the root of a natural tooth, adding support to the jaw and helping to prevent gum and jawbone deterioration.
Dental implants can be color-matched so that they are identical to your natural teeth, and you can choose to have one just one, or a selection of implants as they can be done on a tooth by tooth basis.
Implants are also extremely simple to look after. Just brush, floss and care for them exactly as you would your regular teeth. The better you care for them, the longer they will last and some people have had them upwards of fifteen years without a problem.
If you want to invest in a kilowatt smile that will sizzle those around you for years to come, then we highly recommend dental implants. If you would like to know more about the process, speak to your dentist who will be happy to advise you.
